LANGUAGE ARTS
The language arts curriculum for fifth grade will develop the skills necessary for effective written and spoken communication. Skills include listening, vocabulary, developing writing, and acceptable grammar usage and application. We will have an integrated approach of instruction in grammar mechanics, writing, and listening skills emphasizing practical applications. We will focus on the following writing genres: personal narrative, opinion, and expository.
READING
In fifth grade reading, the students will be reading from McGraw-Hill Reading Series, and Scholastic News. Some genres which will be covered are tall tales, fantasy, adventure, mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, nonfiction, and informational text.
In addition to the textbook, students in fifth grade will also be reading a variety of novels. These novels will help them improve their reading skills as we introduce and reinforce a number of techniques and strategies. In class, we will be having discussions and working in literature circles to make sure students comprehend the books we are reading.
SPELLING
Students will be assigned a new spelling list each week. We will be using SpellingCity where you can find the all of the lists, activities, games, and practice tests. This is a wonderful resource we will use each day in class, and students will also use at home. Assignments over the words will be given daily and spelling tests will be on the last day of the week.

The fifth grade curriculum covers Early America: Beginning to the Ratification of the Bill of Rights 1791.
